Parenting Tip: Where is Your Identity?
How do you identify yourself? As a parent, your career, an athlete, a crafter, a friend,
Being a parent is an important role and one that can be consuming. Being in the workforce and having a taxing job can be all consuming.
When your identity is solely on something or someone else, there will be struggles. What I mean is, when you put your focus on earthly roles and decide who you are based on things of this world, they will let you down. Careers have bumps in the road, changes happen, kids that are parented well can still struggle,
If your role as a parent is more important than any other thing, I encourage you to work on shifting that focus. Our kids need us. Our kids will grow up and leave us. Then what?
Are you dependent on your kids for your worth and purpose? It can happen quickly and easily.
So, what do you do if your identity is wrapped up in your kids?
Move the focus to Jesus.
We can focus on Him more and more every day and move our dependence on him.
When your identity is in Christ, you have a mission and God given strengths that can be used. When you use your strengths and talents for Him, there is joy and ease. Identifying with Him and doing His work will help you feel full of purpose, Yes, we have many roles and our roles are important. To identify with him first and foremost, creates lasting hope and purpose. Choose to have your identity in Him.
